Mesothelioma is a very uncommon type of cancer that is mostly caused due to exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is formed on the outer protective substance that covers the various organs of the body. Commonly, Mesothelioma attacks the outside of lungs and the outer chest area. Research has shown that Mesothelioma occurs to those people who have been workers at asbestos factories and it can be transferred through clothes of asbestos infected materials.
This rare form of cancer has many different symptoms. The most difficult thing in its treatment is the time lapse between the exposure to asbestos and the appearance of the symptoms. Most commonly, these symptoms do not occur until at least twenty to fifty years after the exposure to the metal. Mesothelioma usually shows its symptoms related to the chest side of the body. Some of the common symptoms include chest wall pains, fluids in the lung area, fatigue, nausea and sometimes coughing of blood. Some of the more severe examples of Mesothelioma are formation of tumours which can result in weight loss and upsetting of the bowel function.
Mesothelioma is often described as one of the most difficult form of cancers to be diagnosed. That is because most of the common signs of Mesothelioma are everyday common diseases. Although, the previous history of the patient and the linkages with asbestos can be an important hint towards a possible diagnoses. Commonly, for proper diagnoses the physical check up of the patient is performed. The physical diagnosis includes x-rays of the chest and lung tests. Sometimes doctors also perform MRI scans. Doctors also look for formation of liquid to parts of the lung areas. For final diagnoses, doctors can also do biopsy to be certain of any malignant Mesothelioma cells.
The treatment of Mesothelioma depends upon the stage of and the spread of the cancer through the different parts of the body. Although, because this rare form of cancer is difficult to detect, its prognosis is bad and most of the people who have been confirmed with this form of cancer have very little chances of survival as their cancer is already at a later stage. Surgery is the first method of Mesothelioma removal, although, it hasn’t been successful in removing the cancer and increasing the life span of patients. Radiation has also proven to be unsuccessful in providing a better alternative for treatment of Mesothelioma as it does not increase the forecast of the patient. Lastly, chemotherapy is the only treatment that is known to have an effect on the cancerous cells. The combination of radiation and chemotherapy has been increasingly used to control the disease. Most of the treatments depend upon the stages of the cancer and doctors have recommend employing the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, as this has shown that the Mesothelioma goes into remission with aggressive treatments at the early stages.
